Website Assignment

Requirements

• Index.html page
• At least 3 other pages linked from index.html
• Consistent, overall website theme & design
• Images
• Links (both within your own website and to outside websites) – try linking both images and text
• Use of tables or CSS for page layout
• Change font face, color and size
• Change background color or image (unless you really want it to be white… some websites look good with white… but at least know how)

You need to understand all the code that is used on your page. If you use a template from somewhere or borrow code from another page to help you create certain elements, be sure you understand the code and what each part of it does.

I am very impressed by so many of your websites so far!! Excellent job on them. Keep developing your skills. HTML and related website skills are very useful and practical to have. I have made good money (and volunteered a lot of my time too) from the website skills I developed over the years. The only “courses” I ever took were high school computer courses… the rest I taught myself by looking at other websites (right click, view source!) and doing tutorials now and again.

If web design and development interests you and you now feel like you have a solid base in HTML (which you need!), some next steps are:

- CSS (cascading style sheets)
- CMS (content management systems such as Mambo, WordPress)
- PHP (programming language used to make Facebook applications, run database driven websites, among other things)
- Photoshop (for those of you that enjoy the design side of things) along with Image Ready (which can “slice” up a design into little website sized bits for you)
- Adobe Dreamweaver (a powerful WYSISYG website tool that is used by many in the industry… does a lot of complicated HTML for you.. though you still need to understand the HTML first)
- Adobe Flash (embedded into websites, allows animation, interactivity, etc)

How do I put my website online?

To have your website available to be accessed from anywhere, it needs to be uploaded to a web server. Web servers cost money to run; however, you can find free web servers out there that support their costs by displaying advertisements on your website. My favourite free host just closed, so I really don’t have a particular one I can recommend. Do a google search for “free websites”. One example ishttp://www.bravenet.com/

Sign up for a free webhosting account, then upload all your HTML and image files. Voila.. your website will be online.

How do I get a “.com”?

Websites hosted for free will have the domain address of whatever service you’re using, for example, www.bravenet.com/mywebsite . To have your own domain name, i.e. www.mywebsite.com, you have to register a domain and this costs $. It’s about $25-$35 a year and if you get to this point and need a domain name, you’re likely going to want to buy your own space on a paid web server too. Services like www.doteasy.com provide this for a fee. Most of my websites cost me about $150 a year to keep online.
